Shanize Njeri Wanjiku is a 10-year old girl who lives in the Mathare slum of Nairobi in Kenya. Life is tough there. The people live in ramshackle huts amongst rubbish, sewage and rats. Food is scarce and the children are nearly always hungry. Crime and violence happen every day.
But Shanize has hope and a special gift. She writes and recites poems that describe her life and call for change and unity in her country so that people can live together as one nation without fear and violence. Now her voice is being heard by people around the world.
First broadcast on 7.30, ABC.
